Details

The Yamaha XT660z is earning its place as the Leatherman of adventure touring bikes. A torquey, reliable motor in a well suspended chassis with a whopping tank range and useful fairing.

Recent months have shown that the bike is a very capable off-roader. Ridden very sucessfully in the 'Heroes and Legends' Rally by Jenny Morgan following 8000km of tough old Dakar Rally routes and already showing its worth to overlanders by such venerated riders as Chris Scott, it seems Yamaha have bought the Tenere range back into the limelight with a bang.

As with all adventure bikes the XT660Z suffers from a number of problems, 'out of the crate', not least of which seem to be the manufacturers lack of commitment to protect the bike properly from its intended use! See Chris Scott's holey experiences

Originally available with Yamaha crashbars and a plastic sumpguard these products were so unfit for their intended pupose that after numerous recalls Yamaha scrapped both.

After a brief examination of the originals we could immediately see the problems and kickstarted the infamous Adventure-Spec design process. Having sold over 1000 sets of BMWF800GS crashbars and bashplates (widely recognsed as some of the the best quality aftermarket parts in the business) to many happy customers (see HERE) we set about generating a similar quality of product for the Tenere.

High tensile steel bars precision bent by CNC machine, tig welded by professionals and then powder coated with the familiar Adventure-Spec three coat system (corrosion resistant primer, high build undercoat, protective top coat) start the process but its not all about the finish. Once completed each set of bars has to pass a complex testing programme to ensure it fits our 'Tenere' jig perfectly so that  you know your bars will fit, first time, every time.

The finished bars are designed not only to look good but to properly protect your bike. We know from experience what impact a smashed side casing on the Karakorum Highway or a damaged sump in the middle of the empty quarter of the Sahara feels like, and its not good!  Mounted to the frame downtube at the front (not a piece of 1.6mm pressed steel like the originals), and with a spacer and full width 150mm bolt connecting the rear mount points these bars are going nowhere. They may look like original bars, but there the similarity ends!

Having such a solid mounting point  means the bashplate can also do its job properly. Made from 4mm aircraft grade aluminium, TIG welded and anodized to complete the superb finish the bashplate is tough enough to take huge impacts and protect your casings and sump from the damage it will surely sustain from flicked up rocks and dodgy dropoffs.

To finish the job off we provide anodised spacers and a complete range of stainless fittings. Our motto? If you're going to to it, do it right!

Combined with a well-designed Handguards, this gives all the extra protection needed for hard off-road on the XT660Z.
Bomb-proof so far.
Advisable to put threadlock spray or liquid on the two front crashplate-crashbar fixation bolts.

Great piece of kit tested over 30,000 miles Review by Simon Weller
Great piece of kit tested over 30,000 miles" by , written on 31 January 2017
Looks great very tough. Provides very good protection to the exposed water pump.

I have had mine fitted to my 2011 Tenere for three years. I have covered over 30,000 miles with it in place with a fair bit of off roading. It stood up well to the rock strewn Jaffar Gorge in Morocco, shame my off road "skills" didn't.

The combination of the OE grey plastic panels and this bashplate provided very good protection.

Criticisms: The paint is a bit thin and easily bashed off on the exposed bits, not really a criticism just it needs touching up if you use it in anger. It also has to be swung down out of the way so you can adjust the tappets as it obscures the access hatch to the crank nut. Doing the tappets is a PITA anyway so this is a minor concern. Apply Loctite to the bash plate screws as they can come undone after high mileages.

Other than that a great piece of kit - recommended.

couldn't find anything with similar protection level. it looks and feels very well made. and it also adds very nice look to the bike.
i ordered it directly from adv-spec and was surprised how fast delivery to the eastern europe was.
(-) the fitting of front mounting bolt was pain and i had to cut it/ shorten it quite a bit. it is mentioned in couple of reviews, so i was expecting that.

You will not find a stronger bellypan and crashbar than this.
As far as I know this is the only crashbar that will provide sufficient protection for the water pump on the XT.
With 2 little 50 mm flat bar brackets I have fitted this to my XT660R with a high 2 into 1 exhaust system from Scorpion.
This way the belly pan sits nice and close to the engine and gives better ground clearance.
It is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

Silly me not reading the instructions properly.
Quality product which gives good protection to all the vulnerable parts.

An excellent product was at first convinced it would not fit my 2014 tenere, but i was trying to line up the wrong bolt!! Fitting is very fiddly on the side stand but basicaly straight forward. Make sure you have a 17mm rachet spanner before you start, multijointed fingers help as well. This crash plate is without doubt the best on the market its expensive but well worth it.

Nice bit of engineering ! Review by Pepsi Matrix
Nice bit of engineering !" by , written on 24 March 2014
A very fast delivery gave me a fantastically made sump guard. The aluminium plate has been formed superbly out of thick plate and will be more than up to the job. The frame work that supports the sump plate and guards the water pump and engine casings is made up of heavy guage metal and will do what it needs to do. On the down side it weighs quite a bit and the front fitting bolt is too long making fitment awkward. The solution was to cut the bolt length down by 10mm which still leaves it long enough to pass through its captive nut safely and to be threaded easily through the front frame down tube. The rear fastener passes through the engine's own alloy lugs which were originally used to carry the OEM plastic sump guard. I have to say that a good impact on the new A.S.guard in this area may break those lugs. This would be due to the fact that the A.S. sump guard is so strong that all the impact energy would be transferred to those weaker mounting lugs. This would not be the fault of the sump guard or Adveture Spec at all. Over all It's a fantastic piece of kit but if you're reading this A.S. you do need to reduce the front stainless fastener size, as mentioned more than once here. But thanks for awesome service and a great product...

I fitted the crashplate earlier today and am impressed with its quality and fit. It seems well & robustly made. Fitting is fairly straight forward with the plate's brackets aligning spot-on with the fixing points on the bike's frame. One tip - use a ratchet ring spanner (17mm) to tightenen up the front bolt until there's enough space between said bolt and the exhaust to use a socket & torque wrench - I used a conventional spanner which is fine but took far longer than a ratcheted one would have.

A very well made product fits perfectly, a bit more expensive than the rest but deffinately worth the extra money, not to mention the super fast service from Adventure Spec 5* s for both.

An excellent product far superior to the Yamaha product. A little tricky to install when the bike is on the side stand but overall a fantastic item

Rhino-skin protection for the little Tenere Review by Tourer
Rhino-skin protection for the little Tenere" by , written on 5 October 2011
Great product, with this strapped under my bike I feel far more confident at tackling those drop-offs. I have the feeling that the sump will be impervious to all nature can throw at me. Probably deluded in this belief, but I like the solid hunk of aluminium, the weld quality and the attention that has gone into making this bash-plate. Perfect protection of the radiator housing. Would be great if we could get a crash protector for the radiator and side panels too. A little difficult to fit, chose to shorten a bolt rather than remove the exhaust.
