Description

What is it?

The Atacama Race Jacket is an extremely tough lightweight jacket that is focussed on rally and extreme ADV riding. It can be either used on its own in hot environments where ventilation and abrasion protection are required, or paired with the Atacama Waterproof Jacket for weather protection and Core Base Layer for warmth. It is competition ready and can be used with or without a neck brace. Insert armour or wear over an armoured base layer for impact protection.

How does it work?

The jacket achieves max ventilation and strength through the use of fabrics designed for extreme conditions. The core of the jacket is made from military spec snag resistant nylon 6.6 fabric. This makes for a very tough construction that is also well ventilated due to its open knit construction. To add impact protection we have reinforced key abrasion zones with 1000D ballistic nylon. This provides a good balance between strength and overall weight. Internal pockets will receive back, shoulder and elbow armour if required.

Who is it for?

The Atacama Race jacket has been designed for riders who require extreme performance with minimal weight. Double Dakar finisher Lyndon Poskitt was instrumental in its development and used it for his 2017 Malle Moto campaign. If you are rally rider or serious about light weight ADV travel, and is looking for a versatile jacket that is part of a comprehensive clothing system then the Atacama Race Jacket fits the bill.

Questions on Atacama Race Jacket

  • From Steve at 06/01/2018 01:33
    • Hi, Does the waterproof outer jacket come with the race jacket? I can't see it in the details or listed separately for sale.

      Cheers
    • Steve,

The Atacama Race Shell is due with us in March and will sold seperately to the Atacama Race jacket.

      I hope that helps.

    • Hi
I have the road version of the LEATT neckbrace, can’t remember the model version atm, will this fit? in the jacket?

Also, are there any colour options when the back orders come in?

      Mark
    • Mark,

It isn't something we tested the jacket with, but the neck aperture on the road version looks identical to the off-road versions (as you would expect) and the lip around the base of the neck hole to help locate your jacket also looks to be very similar if not identical. I would suggest that it should be fine.

I had the opportunity to test the Atacama Race Jacket along the Atacama Trousers during an intense week of desert riding in the Tunisian Sahara.
I used it without any inner armour. I was wearing a separate full body armour and a Leatt neck brace. With this setting, as first impression, the jacket felt tight on the sleeves, however this was just an impression that was soon dismissed when the jacket was closed. I then realise that the sleeves were in fact right and long enough allowing free movements of my arms and trunk. I loved the fact that selves have that extra couple of inches in length to go over the gloves leaving my wrists are always covered.
The jacket is extremely well trimmed and with a body armour feels straight on your body, tight just enough to stay in shape still allowing perfect movements. I loved the fact that is shaped to cover your bum while it is shorter on the front.
Front zip is very strong and works perfectly well as all the other zips in twin set. The building material is very nice. It is rather soft and flexible still maintaining that rigidity that is very reassuring and practical when riding. Certainly nothing like I tried before.
Jacket vent system is good and was perfect in that riding conditions (sunny/windy 10-30 degrees).
It could do with an inner secure pocket. With a waterproof shall can be used in variable conditions without problems. Can't think of anything else!

I'd recommend the jacket, just understand what your getting/not getting. Review by tileman

The jacket was as described. Meaning, its not what is has, its what it hasn't. In a age when gear comes quite often with more options this jacket fits in the school of thought that less is more.

I originally felt there were things missing, but theres not. Its just simple, basic, well made, functional and works, at least for me. For what it is designed for, its great.

I'm changing over to layering vs an all in one jacket. In Australia where the temp can get hot, however change fairly rapidly, this suits. Also having a jacket that is designed for a neck brace is great as I use it all the time. Once a outer shell thats fully waterproof is used its not my different from the Klim jacket I had before. For others I have a old gortex that I use that fits, I cannot comment about the ADV spec version.

Overall I'm happy. Its not perfect, however no jacket is.

I'm using the jacket with a Leatt pressure suit, neck brace and force accessories CE 2 elbow guards. The one thing I missed in the description (and its clear about this, my bad) is that there IS space to fit a bladder underneath, there is no specific provision (i.e. bladder pocket).
