An incident for Stan Watt today dropped his overall placing to 25th and left him fighting his bike for 147km through soft sand, find out more at FrontRowGB's pages HERE .

Meanwhile the more technical shorter sections of the race seem to be favouring Craig Bounds as he begins a steady climb up the leader board [...]

  • The Dakar 2009 Stage 5 Neuguen - San Rafael

Posted on January 8, 2009 by wonky

Stage 5, the hardest day in a Dakar Rally for years...as some called it.
171 bikes started the 505km of timed stage today. A mixture of tracks, no tracks, and big sand dunes made for a truly testing day that left the field decimated with only 129 finishers out of 158 starters.
Stan held his 20th place [...]

  • Craig runs Stage six from San Rafael to Mendoza

Posted on January 8, 2009 by wonky

Another 395km of technical riding off piste today allowed Craig to consolidate his position and move up the leader board to 82nd place.

Only one more days riding will see Craig at the rest day with a chance to recover and rest ready for the mammoth sand days ahead.

  • Day 6 Of The Dakar 2009

Posted on January 8, 2009 by wonky

A three hour time delay, a reinstated 1/3 of the bike field and a shortening of the 500+km special stage to 178km means it can only be The DAKAR!!

Stan is holding 22nd place and Craig is picking things up a little as he finished in 80th place on the stage today 11th overall. We're hoping [...]

  • The Dakar 2009 Stage 4 Jacobacci - Neuguen

Posted on January 7, 2009 by wonky

Stage 4 turned out to be 'the day the Dakar got started'!
A wilderness day without tracks and trails in some areas with miles of pampas grass, river crossings, and many treacherous pot holes and boulders. A navigation nightmare with tough riding thrown in for good measure.
Stan charged hard early in the day and made good [...]

  • Craig runs Stage five from Neuguen to San Rafael

Posted on January 7, 2009 by wonky

A punishing 506km of special stage today almost brought the rally to its knees as many competitors failed to finish the stage in the prescribed time. Inorder to ensure the continuation of the event part of thestage was neutralised and riders were given the opportunity to continue racing despite extreme lateness.
Rather implausibly the technical riding [...]

  • Day 5 Of The Dakar 2009

Posted on January 7, 2009 by wonky

The fifth day of the Dakar really shook up the field as Jon Stamper crashed out of the event and over 1/3 of the field failed to reach the evenings bivouac within the time limits. A hard day indeed, but with some stunning scenery.

Check the FrontRowGB pages for information about Jon Stampers accident. Stan Watt [...]

  • The Dakar 2009 Stage 3 Puerto Madryn - Jacobacci

Posted on January 6, 2009 by wonky

Stage 3 was the first day of the event taking place in Patagonia one of the wildest and most remote places on the planet. There was a series of ten lakes to negociate and the riders informed us that the terrain changed noticably from the flat scrubland of the past few days to a far [...]

  • Craig runs Stage four from Jacobacci to Neuguen

Posted on January 6, 2009 by wonky

459km of Special stage today, acknowledged by some to be the first 'proper' stage of the race, saw Craig up and amazingly ready to race two hours before dawn.
Even more incredible was Craigs progress back up the leaderbaord to 116th place despite navigational issues, a broken sternum and three broken ribs...
It seems that far from [...]
