Quick Overview

Renowned Adventure Motorcyclist and Long-Term Adventure-Spec associate Walter Colebatch has developed these bags to address his own needs. As such if you're planning a transcontinental or RTW journey through remote areas on rugged terrain, they should fit the bill for you as well!

Adventure-Spec Magadan Panniers

Heres what Walter has to say about the Magadan Panniers...

" Most of you know the idea ... Hard boxes are clearly not suited to the type of travel I am doing. The more off road your travels are, the more you need soft luggage rather than hard luggage.

But existing soft luggage doesnt do the job. No-one in the soft luggage business seems to know what adventure travellers actually need when it comes to transcontinental or RTW journeys. In my experience, the bags of canvas (AndyStrapz, Steel Ponys) are not water resistant, nor are they abrasion resistant, and they have no security. Plastic roll bags (Wolfman, Ortlieb, Endurostan) are too small, not low enough, have little to no abrasion resistance and no security.

Having tried pretty much everything out there and still frustrated by the shortage of features, I decided to build a set for myself. I wanted bags that were capable of carrying a good 35 litres of stuff. The bigger the bags are, the more weight you can get down low, and the smaller your back bag needs to be. I wanted bags that could keep your stuff dry. In the end I decided a removeable waterproof dry bag liner was the best solution as you can take your dry stuff out in a 5 second grab - and take it into your tent - or accommodation - without having to rummage thru the bag in the rain, or take a wet muddy outer bag into a tent or hotel.

Then the bags had to be lockable - a few ideas came and went before I decided to use PacSafe WrapSafe cables. The advantage of these cables is that you can not only lock the bags shut, but you can lock the bags to your luggage rack - by routing the cable through it. The bags have loops front and back for routing the cable and holding it to the bag. So by doing that we had the first motorcycle soft bags that actually offer some sort of security and lockability.

But to complete the security picture we wanted to make the bags slash proof. Not much point locking the bags shut if someone can just slice them open in 2 seconds. Again everything including internal wire mesh was considered, before deciding to sandwich a layer of Kevlar / Twaron in the bag construction. Its extremely difficult to cut and is used in stab proof and bullet proof vests. This puncture restance further adds to the durability of the bags.

Finally the outer material ... Cordura has earned a very good reputation as an extremely abrasion resistant fabric. Many riding pants and jackets are made from 600 denier Cordura. To imagine the durability difference between Cordura and canvas, imagine wearing canvas jeans and sliding down an asphalt road on them - as compared to the same with normal Cordura riding jacket and pants. To make sure of the durability and ruggedness of the product, we decided to pass on the 600 denier Cordura and go straight for 1000 denier Cordura - almost twice as thick and many times as strong. With a outer bag sandwich of 1000D Cordura AND Kevlar / Twaron fabric, the bag is much much much tougher than anything on the market in terms of durability and survivability.

So thats the idea, to make the toughest, most durable RTW soft bags that are waterproof, slashproof, abrasion resistant and lockable - since they are the shortcomings I have experienced in existing soft bags on the market. "

Questions on Adventure-Spec Magadan Panniers

  • From richard at 28/08/2012 10:37
    • hi,

will these fit with this rack?
      http://www.weldcore.com/drz1.jpg
    • The Magadan panniers are designed to be used with any rack system that keeps the bags away from the rear wheel and the exhuast, they are not rack specific.

      Hope that helps

    • Hi,

Do the Magadan bags incorporate a means of attachment to the lower part of a pannier frame?

      Thanks,

      Ian.
    • Ian,

We have always found that 'Tags' sewn on to panniers result in tags ripped off panniers as soon as there is any reall load applied ot a constant tugging or pulling.

The Magadan panniers are designed to have a strap tied around the entire pannier and then around the frame. There are slots in the front and rear bottle holders which allow the strap to pass through to help hold everything in place.

      Hope that helps!

    • I like the look of these. Forgive my ignorance but is there an off the peg rack that I can buy to use on my 09 Tenere XT 660 Z? I see something in the picture ad for Kriega panniers but no links. Thank you for your help.
    • We recommend the use of rear luggage pannier racks like the Metal Mule units with traditional 'Hoop' luggage racks. They seem to work best with thiese panniers.

    • Interesting bags.....but
      In your description you said:
<<< I decided to build a set for myself. I wanted bags that were capable of carrying a good 35 litres of stuff. The bigger the bags are, the more weight you can get down low>>>

      But answering someone's question:
<<<What is the volume of each bag?
The Magadan panniers are Approx 25 litres per side.>>>

      Why so small?
And why not provide a complete product, include the PAC -Safe locking, and the extra straps to attach to a rack?

It just seems you are almost there with the perfect product, but you are missing bits.

    • The bags roll down to less than 25 litres a side as they have a roll top. So, you can roll them down to carry a total of 35 litres or up to 25 litres per side for a maximum total of 50 litres.

When we looked at providing the PAC Safe systems with the Magadan Panniers the UK importer of the PAC Safe systems wanted to charge us more to buy the locks than You could buy them from on Amazon! We simply couldn't sell the items without overcharging our customers.

    • do you have a outlet in the US?
what would shipping be to the US?
    • I'm afraid we don't have an outlet in the USA. But, we do ship to the US almost every day and have a tracked courier servcie that we can follow from our warehouse to your door. Typical delivery times to the USA are 48 hours to the west coast.

The price of the panniers sent to the USA will be £291 for the panniers (we remove UK sales tax when we ship outside the EU) and a shipping charge of £36.30 for a total of £291.67.

      Hope that helps.

  • From svsitt at 04/01/2013 17:29
    • How adjustable are the straps that go over the bike on these? I am looking at getting either two of the 1 or 2 gallon rotopax and was curious if these would fit over those. If this is not clear i am looking at mounting the rotopax to the soft luggage racks i have and then slinging these over the rotopax containers will this work?? thank you for you help.
    • svsitt,

This question is very dependent on how wide the rear of your bike is. XT250 vs BMW1200GS. There should be enough strap length to hang the panniers over 2 rotopax on a smaller bike but you may struggle on a 1200GS with rear racks. That said, it is really easy to add extra length to the straps as they are designed to be variable in length using velcro.

      Hope that helps

My understanding is that the max size is currently 25ltrs per side.

      thanks dave
    • Hi dave,

We wont be going any bigger with these bags and have no plans to make any different sizes. These are as big as we would dare go with a soft bag. Anything bigger and a you need to be looking for something more rigid.

      Hope this helps!

    • Would you toss us a picture of how these strap to a typical rack.

What is typically used for straps and how do they mount.

      Thnaks,

      Jim
    • Hi Jim,

try this link below to give a good setup from the 'father' of the bags, Walter Colebatch. Basically he has a strap horizontally around the bags and rack (through the hoops behind the bottle pouches), plus another one vertically for extra support.

      http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5238/7215385320_a34a599dbf_b.jpg

The bags are designed with a fair few options for fixings. Each bike is different so getting the optimal fit for the bike/rack combo requires a bit of trial and error

There are loads of images of these bags in use on Walter's epic thread from his ride this summer. There are a few relevant shots on the very first page

      http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=834987

Chris Scott's post on his Adventure Motorcycling Handbook website also has some good shots and ideas...

    • I've been following these for some time and the finished product really looks good. I am interested to see how you compare these with the new Giant Loop Siskiyou panniers that are just hitting the market. It appears that they may hold a bit more, but are a lot more expensive.

      Thanks in advance.
    • Bob,

The Siskiyou Panneirs are physically larger than the magadan panniers, stiffer and a very different shape (they can be used with or without rear racks. The magadan panniers are conversely smaller, lighter, and are a square section shape o be used with a traditional rack system. The Magadan panniers are also slash proof.

Both are great sets of panniers. Which you choose depends on your personal preferenc/needs.

      Good luck!

    • Do you think these would work well with the wolfman racks? I like that they're smaller&lighter than traditional racks, but think they may mount the bags too high, being counter productive. if it helps these would be on a 01 Dakar
    • The Magadan panniers are designed to be used witha traditional 'square' hooped rack. I am aware of the wolfman racks and can't guarantee a perfect fit, although I am sure (as with most things) they could be adjusted to fit.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but without racks and panniers in front of me its hard to be accurate.

    • What should I look for in a strap to secure the bags to my racks? I understand the PacSafe option is good for "securing" them, but I also need something to secure them from moving and flopping around. Can't wait to use the bags on an adventure!
    • McGarrett,

A simple 1 inch tape strap with a metal camlock buckle is usually the most popular solution. You can get these from any motorcycle shop that sells new bikes (the new models come tied down with them), or you can buy a good quality proprietary brand of strap such as Rok Strap.

      Hope that helps.

      http://www.jesseluggage.com/ktm950-990.html

If you look on 4th picture down you will see that the rack is not leveled.
    • The panniers are designed to be used with single hoop racks such as Metal Mule or our own Adventure Spec racks. The Panniers could be made to work with the Jesse racks, but you would have to make modifications to level the racks surface onto a single plane.

      2. Will it work with the following pannier racks? http://touratech.co.nz/shop/index.php?id_product=2743&controller=product

The bags will cost £291 as we remove the UK sales tax when we export outside the EU. Postage will cost £65.00 and the bags will be with you in 2-4 working days.

Yes, it will work perfectly with the Touratech racks.

    • I'd like to know if the Magadans would work on a bike like the Moto Guzzi V7 Stone? My worry is that the bags may have too much height to remain off the pipes of the bike. Since the exhausts are not routed high like on typical adventure bikes the Hepco Becker racks I've seen don't seem to have the width to keep a soft bag away from the exhaust pipe. I suppose when I get the bike I can measure the distance from the seat to the exhaust and see if it is possible but if you have any experience with the V7 and these bags I'd love to hear it.
    • I'm afraid we don't have any experience fitting the magadan panniers onto Moto Guzzi V7 Stones, but we have provided the measurements of the panniers so that you can use them to compare with your bike.

      Sorry we can't help more.

    • Hi I really like the look of this product and am trying to decide between these and the giant Loop panniers.
Can you tell me please , If the loops that you use to attach the pac safe wrap safe cables to the bike with , are also Kevlar protected , so as to stop them being cut away from the bike also .
I am considering them for my Africa twin RD04 , will the panniers be safe enough away from the exhaust ?
      mark
    • Mark,

The loops used to contain the pacsafe cables are Twaron filled to reduce the likleyhood of being cut. I can't comment upon the location of the panniers with respect to your exhaust as that very much depends how you mount them and which racks you are using.

Bit of a noob to touring in general never mind "overlanding" however I wanted soft panniers with reasonable capacity and a degree of security. Love these. Rear pockets take 2x 1.5l water bottles. Front will take 1x 500+ml can of drink or 2x 250ml cans and they won't fall out under normal circumstances. I used MasterLock python cable locks and they worked a treat. Money very well spent. I was lucky to get my hands on a set of the protorype Magadan panniers. When I got them they had already been used for two months on heavy duty off roading. They looked like new :-)

I used the panniers from Yakutsk, via the Old Summer Road, to Magadan. The first of Adventure-Spec Magadan panniers to actually get to Magadan :-) Crossing loads of rivers and iffy bridges. They did the job.

They sit low on the bike for stability. They take a fall or ten. No damage. I drowned the panniers in deep rivers. 100% water proof. If you have been on the Old Summer Road you know what I mean.

I can highly recomend these panniers for the serious offroader.

Best on the Market Review by Harry

Having used many of the assorted soft panniers on the market at various times in the last decade, and having always found too many deficiencies with them, I am pleased to see someone has got it right. Really tough bags, survived dozens of falls in Morocco. I never got to test the waterproofing, but the toughness of the bags is the best I have seen. The ability to lock them to the bike is awesome, and quite frankly, about time that soft bag makers addressed that issue. Five stars from me - someone actually knows what they are doing. Huge storage, removeable dry bags, 2 pockets large enough for the 2 litre oil bottles sold by TT and H.G, 2 other front pockets large enough to take 1 litre flexan bottles.(perfect to 'P' in at night!!
5 days of hellish thunderstorms and massive downpours without respite + 1 dunking in a small river crossing-d'uh! it happens-and just a bit of dampness at the top of the roll on outer bag.
Only mod I did was to add small straps to hold bags on my MM frames and a 'belt-and-braces extra supporting strap around each bag. Very happy- Well done Walter.
good kit and saving me 10.5 Kgs when I don;t use my MM 45 litre cases

not developed....copied Review by Andy

Another copy of my decade old design. Very flattering. But Cordura? It should peel open like a banana in a fall

**Adventure Spec Comment**

Development means to take an existing design and modify it in an attempt to improve it in some way. Although the face fabric of this product is Cordura it is backed by a Kevlar / Twaron fabric which not only makes it extremely tough, it also makes it stab and slash proof creating the worlds first secure soft pannier. This in addition to the ability to lock it to a bike using a proprietary cable lock system, but allow super fast removal of your packed kit by removal of (an included) dry bag is unlike any other product on the market today. Similar in concept to other designs, agreed. Similar in operation? Not if you want a soft pannier which is waterproof as standard, stab/slashproof and is something you can lock and leave on your bike. We think we are justified using the term 'developed'.
