Description

Details

BMW have created a great bike for all riders interested in seeking out the road less travelled in their F800GS (and F650GS twin).
Please note whilst these crashbars do fit the F650GS very well they do protrude more than on the F800GS (google images show several pics of them fitted on a F650GS - e.g. see http://f800riders.org/forum/showthread.php/28344-F650-and-Adventure-Spec-vs.-Wild-Heart-crash-bars).

At Adventure-Spec we believe the most important additions to a bike are those that let you go beyond the 'safe' routes without worrying about terminally damaging your means of exploration, ie you or your bike.

Firstly we produced our bashplate/sumpguard/skidplate in powdercoated silver or black to ensure your engine and lower bike was kept as safe as possible.

Now we have produced a compatible set of crash bars that may limit damage to your bikes engine cases, radiator and bodywork in the event of a spill.

We have sold over 1000 of these crashbar sets and have had some superb feedback from our customers about how well they do their job.

Manufactured by CNC tube bending machines using a non-standard high tensile steel we are able to keep the seam running along the inside edge of the bars increasing strength dramatically over standard bent tube.

Completed with our usual high standard of TIG welding (unlike other inferior MIG welded products) and then triple powder coated for superb corrosion resistance these bars not only complement your bike (we used the same diameter of tubing as your frame and matched the powder coat colour as closely as possible to BMW frame coatings) but provide tough expedition tested protection.

Among many awesome comments from both customers and journalists about our products, US magazine Overland Journal said, 'These are the highest quality aftermarket parts we have ever fitted to a motorcycle'.

'Nuff said...

Questions

Questions on Adventure-Spec Crashbars BMW F800GS (F650GS)

  • From Fred Flintstone at 21/08/2011 11:45
    • Do you make these bars in stainless steel?
    • I'm afraid we don't. Whilst we recognise that manufacturing in stainless steel would reduce corrosion in the event of a crash which broke though our powder coating we aren't prepared to compromise the protective ability of our bars.

Stainless steel has awesome anti-corrosion qualities but is a very 'soft' metal which means it will bend easily under impact. What we believe is needed for crashbars is a higher tensile steel that is tough enough to resist initial bending but soft enough not to break under extreme load. We believe we have selected the best material for this job. No compromise!

Also, in the the event of some kind of impact that did 'break' the bars mid expedition it is a lot easier to find someone who can weld 'normal' steel than it is to find a specialist 'stainless' welder. Thankfully this scenario is yet to happen but you never know...

    • Can I use these crashbars with the standard BMW bashplate?

  • From Guy Fixsen at 17/10/2011 21:36
    • How much weight in kilos do these bars add to the bike and do they fit the F650GS twin (with its' smaller radiator) snuggly?
    • The bars add approximately 5kg to the weight of the bike. They do not fit 'snuggly' to the side of the bike as there must be some space for the metal to deform in the event of a large crash without damaging the bike's plastics.

To check the distance of the bars from the side of the bike try a search in Google for 'Adventure Spec F650GS crash bars' and click on the images tab. I found some good clear images there.

      Hope that helps!

    • By collectors I'm assuming you mean the exhaust header pipes? Our bashplates only work with the BMW standard pipes but as far as I'm aware our crashbars work with any header pipes. We have sold over 1000 sets now and I have heard no comments to the contrary.

  • From Robert at 05/04/2012 12:28
    • I would like to ask you wether this crashbar would fit on a 800 GS with an Touratech fuel tank fitted. This tank is great but too expensive to damage on offroad trips.
I saw that all tubes are parallel, maybe it is possible to widen this crashbar easely to fit around the wider tank.

      Thank you for answering,

      Robert
    • Hi Robert,

Unfortunately these crash bars will not fit with the Touratech fuel tank. We're currently not aware of anyone making a set that will.

Widening the bars is possible, but I doubt it would be an easy job. Perhaps the best option for you is to find a local fabricator to produce a custom set for use with the tank.

      Sorry we cant help further!

    • I already have a bash-plate and handlebar guards for my BMW F800 GS. Am going to order the crash bars from you guys. is there any other protection that you would recommend?

      Many thanks
    • We believe these three items are the holy trinity of core protection!

A set of luggage racks, or a Giantloop Great Basin almost act like crashbars for the bikes rear end. Other than that a smashed headlight can be a bummer, but we're not convinced by the need for a lot of the other 'protectors' on offer in the market

      hope this helps!

    • How much to ship these crash bars to California?
    • We ship to the west coast of the USA most days. A typical delivery time is around 48 hours. We ship using a courier that tracks the package from our warehouse to your door.

The cost varies with time and the best way to get an accurate price is to add the crashbars to your basket and 'checkout'. If you add you US address at that point there is a 'Shipping Estimator' which will let you know the current postage costs immediately.

Currently shipping costs will be £36.30 but the UK sales tax (VAT) will be removed form the item as we are shipping outside the EU so the bars themselves will currently cost £171.66.

      Hope that helps

    • Do you plan on making a new design to "Better
esthetically fit" the 2013 and newer F 800 GS?
    • Dan,

That is undecided at this time. We did originally intend to do this, but as the old bars fitted well we left the cosmetic upgrade until we had some spare time and capacity. Sadly we don't get much of that! Most likely will be a modification for the new F800GS Adventure.

    • Do your crash bars fit the 800 adventure? If not, when do you think they will be available? I've watched a bunch of videos from motoriley on Youtube in Canada, and it's unbelievable how much damage your bars can withstand! Well made brothers, well made!!!
    • Hi Jeff,

We have not got hold of an F800GS Adventure yet to try our bars, but from looking at photos we do not think they will fit.

We do plan on producing crashbars for this bike, but I really cannot speculate on timing as it is wholly dependent on getting a bike. We do not think development should take too long once we have a bike though as we have been told the mounting points are the same on the regular 800GS, so that key part of the jig is correct

      hope this helps!

    • You say in the instructions to torque the 100mm bolts to "manufacturer's spec". Marvelous! Any idea what that is? BMW doesn't put that value in the owners manual. For the life of me, I cannot understand why you'd list all the OTHER values, and not this one.

That said, the bars look great and went on just fine.
    • I believe that the BMW specification for 10mm bolts is 34Nm.

    • You were asked this question a while ago, but I found the answer imprecise. Quote from 2 years ago:
"•what is the diameter/circumference of the tubing (in inches, if you can)? thanks.
•The tubing is 25mm or slightly under 1 inch (by 0.4mm).

      Hope that helps,"

Problem here is that the OP asked diameter/circumference, and your answer of 25mm did not specify which it was for, dia. or circum.
so- 25 mm diameter, or circumference? Looking to spec some Vision X LEDs onto my F8GS, i'd like something to allow mounting off the upper crossbar.

      Thanks,
      Joe

    • My wife just bought a F700GS. I'm almost sure the crash bars for the 650/800 will fit the 700 as well, but I thought it odd that it isn't mentioned. Can you confirm that they do (or do not) fit the 2013 F700GS? Thanks.
    • Hi Art,

We have not actually had images of them on a 700GS but I am 99% certain they will fit. What I would say is that, like with the 650, they will stick out more as these bikes are a little narrower than the 800GS they were designed to fit.

      Hope this helps!

    • Hi,

I have a set of these bars and bash plate, they were fitted when I purchased the bike. If you do it, how much would it cost to have them refurbished? The bars are showing a reasonable amount of corrosion, obviously the bash plate is not corroded but could probably do with re-powder coating as well.
    • Rich,

We don't offer a refurbish service, but any local powder coating company should be able to shot blast them off and re-coat them for a reasonable cost. I'd guess at £50 (in the UK) if they dropped them in at the end of a run of black powdercoat.

      Thanks,

      John
    • John,

The USA does not charge import duty on these items as it is a zero rated product for US citizens. In addition to this we remove the UK sales TAX (20%) that you see on our EU pricelist automatically once you enter your shipping destination (i.e. The USA). Once you pay at checkout the price you see is the price you will pay.

We never capture your money until your goods leave our warehouse, when they are then tracked from our warehouse to your door. Typical shipping times to the west coast are between 2-3 working days.

      We hope that helps

    • Sorry if this has asked before , I'm pretty tall 2.04m or 5ft 21in and have long legs . Would my knees or shins touch any bars?
    • Mike,

Its an impossible question to answer. We have had people taller than you with inches to clear and people as short at 1.75m who claimed there were issues. It all depends on your anatomy (the length of your femur), your riding style and whilst we can generalise there is no definitive answer until you try them.

In general we find that upto about your height there are no issues, but much taller and we start to see problems arising. But, we recommend trying a friends bike if at all possible before purchasing and if you are not sure then give us a call/drop us mail so we can discuss dimensions in a little more detail.

We haven't tried the Twalcom headers personally or seen any reports anywhere of the tem being used inconjunction with our own hard parts so it isn't possible for us to give you a definitive answer I'm afraid.

    • I've search the banks of answer, I'm not sure if i got them correctly.

here it goes again: does this bar fit into US spec F800GS?

if not, when it will be available?

      many thanks in advance
    • We have sold hundreds (if not thousands) of these bars to the USA since we started manufacturing them and have seen numerous pictures of bars fitted to US bikes. In all that time we have never heard of any compatibility issues. Please just ensure you order the correct model of crashbar for your bike as we have different versions for the F800 GS and the F800GS Adventure.

      Many thanks for the question!

    • Hello ,
I want to know if this bars fit the touratech expedition bashplate

      http://shop.touratech.it/protezione-motore-expedition-per-bmw-f650gs-twin-f700gs-f800gs-f800gs-adventure-nero.html

      Thanks
    • Luca,

We have never tried this exact combination ourselves, but our crashbars generally work with any bashplate. It is our bashplates for this bike that do not normally work with other brands of crashbars.

      We hope that makes sense...!

    • Hi. Firstly I can testify to these being a great product having severely tested them in a high speed Patagonian crash. Hence is it possible to buy parts i.e. one side to replace damage area or are these only sold as whole units?

      Thanks.
    • Hi Darren,

We only sell these as whole units unfortunately. As the two sides are connected they will all bend in a crash so replacing one side does not work well.

    • I've heard that being 6-3 these bars hit knees and are uncomfortable....I try not to sit forward, but have a custom day long seat that places my butt..lol any comments?
    • Its an impossible question to answer. We have had people taller than you with inches to clear and people as short at 1.75m who claimed there were issues. It all depends on your anatomy (the length of your femur), your riding style and whilst we can generalise there is no definitive answer until you try them.

In general we find that up to about 6ft in height there are no issues, but much taller and we start to see problems arising. But, we recommend trying a friends bike if at all possible before purchasing and if you are not sure then give us a call/drop us mail so we can discuss dimensions in a little more detail.

      We hope that helps.

When are you going to produce a foot plate for the 2015 model

      Thanks

      ramble on
    • These crashbars will NOT fit a F800GS Adventure of any year. We have separate bars to fit that bike here.

      http://www.adventure-spec.com/default/adventure-spec-crashbars-bmw-f800gs-adventure.html

There is no date for an updated 2015 foot plate as yet.

    • We don't have any plans in the works right now I am afraid, but it's something we'll keep an eye on.

      Hope that helps.

I researched crash bars extensively for my 2011 BMW F800GS. These bars were by far the best option for protecting me and my bike. Unbelievably easy install, great quality and the shipping was off the charts. They shipped from England on Monday and I received them in Northern Colorado USA on Wednesday afternoon.

Just a quick write up to thank the people of adventure spec for these fantastic engine bars. I've had them fitted for 4 years and just short of 45,000 miles of mainly commuting and light adventuring on my 650gs twin.

Through that time they've had a few offs and bumps, each time protecting the bike almost completely. In fact the worst these bars have had were just before christmas this year when wind blew the bike over it's side stand! The only damage was bent bars and a broken indicator (funnily enough there was less damage from a 30 mph left hand bump from a car resulting in an off).

I'll be ordering a replacement set in the next couple of weeks as they're a bit wavey and very orange from where all the powder coating has been chipped off.

Ok first off I want to say after spending a lot off time checking out so many different crash bars I went with these ones after reading the many reviews I thought these sounded and looked the best looking ones.
I live in Australia I paid and ordered on a Friday night and I had them in my hand on the following Monday at 10.30am that's pretty good service.
I spent about 40min and they fitted up with no problems it went on the bike as per the instructions and yes they looked great, I am 185cm and was a little worried after reading that a few guys had problems with their knees touching on the bars but I had to say I haven't had a problem at all heaps of room for me.
Ok the test, 2 weeks after fitting I was out with some mate in the local forestry having a great time came round a corner and there was some deep rutts and yes down I went was around 50km dirt track I had a big one and was picked up by a rescue chopper with broken collar bone, 3 ribs and broken thumb, I was taken out and a mate rode my bike out it looked a mess mud and dirt everywhere I got home a few days later and my mate brought my bike home he had cleaned it up, there was no damage at all the bars saved everything behind them I didn't have a single scratch anywhere,
I was do happy and hardly a mark on the bars, yes I recommend these bars great work saved me big time ! Thanks Adventure-Spec great product !

I have been riding over 30 years and this is the first aftermarket product that went on like factory. Perfect fit on my 2010 F800GS. I'm 5'11" with 32"inseam. Knees only touch when Im scrunched forward on the seat (knee pads in my riding pants). They look better in real life than in pictures as the sit closer than photos make it look.

Havent tested them yet. Remember to check duty and taxes when you factor it all in. Still way cheaper than a rad and fairings.

Proven solid, a little bumpy on the knees Review by Wil
Proven solid, a little bumpy on the knees" by , written on 20 July 2015
Couple of negative points before the good:

1) The bolts that came with the bars stripped well below their torque setting.
2) My knees rest on the bars at all times, and that's a real problem if you're not standing on the pegs over a bump.

Now the good

1) Adventure Spec were fantastic about sorting the bolts - they sent me off to a top flight mechanic to get them out and fit the new ones AS sent out.
2) Resting your knees on the bars isn't uncomfortable on road, if anything it's quite reassuring.
3) I have dropped the bike on green lanes about 8000 times since fitting, and they have been SUPERB. The fairing hasn't been touched, and the bars are still very much in original shape, if not missing a lot of paint.

For reference, I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam.

After alot of research I decided to go with these bars for my 800GS. I'm based in Thailand and do alot of riding in the region photographing and working on conservation issues so I get not so very remote places and I want gear that will stand up to it. These bars are excellent for the price, first class design and manufacture. The welds are very good, very impressed with the overall quality of the package including stainless fasteners. Nice simple effective design. I'm close to 2 metres tall and don't have any issues with my legs hitting the bars, but I do have a high rally seat fitted. Great, fast service but got hit big time on the import duty/tax which made it overall an expensive purchase but worth it for the long term..

I have installed many aftermarket parts on many different types of bikes. I have never EVER had a set of crash bars to install as easy as these. They bolted right up, easy and well explained instructions and most of all......all the parts were in the package. They look great and provide great protection for the critical parts on the bike. Oh and shipping was fast and I live in the USA. I will be back for more products from them.

Great bars, would buy again Review by Laura
Great bars, would buy again" by , written on 20 October 2014
Hi,

When I bought these bars back in late 2009, early 2010, there weren't a lot of other options here in the US and I am glad for that because these are the best crash protection I could have bought (in combination with the bash plate, which I also bought).

In the time I have had these bars, I have dropped my bike multiple times in the dirt and on rocks and the bike was fine every time. This would be expected given the nature of the riding this bike and these bars are designed for. But I was truly impressed after an incident where I went down in a slick section of road right past a water crossing. The bike went down hard and it spun on the crash bar. The bar suffered some minor scratches from where it was in contact with the asphalt, but protected the bike and I was able to ride home. Later, I took the bars off to check if they were still true and they were! They are still on the bike today and I plan on keeping them there.

Fitted to my F700 GS, as all other comments everything lined up spot on, had to shoot out for a T50 Torx head to remove the existing bolts you always need the one you haven't got. Only cost £3 though would be worth dropping in the bolt kits to top off the installation. That said well pleased with the parts excellent finish and fit with top spec bolts. A British product too!.

I received my bars in good time and the product is beautifully made, easy to install and looks great. However…. I am 185 cm tall (Just over 6 foot) and my knees rest on the bars the entire time I am riding. They are restrictive when I am moving around on the bike off road and very uncomfortable. I have contacted ADV Spec immediately after the first test ride and was told they will not offer a refund. The product is great but make sure that the bars fit your legs before you buy as due to the way they are designed they don't fit everyone.

AS Comment:

***This is a good point, in our product questions we suggest that if you have any concerns about the bars not fitting you contact us to allow some more detailed measuring to take place, or try a set before you buy (if that's possible). We have now sold over 2500 sets of these bars and had only 3 people who have felt it impossible to ride with the bars as fitted. Obviously this is influenced by factors of personal ergonomics and riding style, but these factors should be taken into account before purchasing if possible. Thanks for taking the time to point this out Aaron!***

Hello.

I will tell you about my crash last Sunday. I was driving on the west side of Sweden, an area with much forest, small lakes and much wildlife. In appr. 75 miles/h suddenly a deer, with av weight around 50 pound, came up from the forest and it tried to ran across the road, but hit it`s head in between my front wheel and the engine. It was a pretty hard crash, but I had great luck!

For two years ago i bought myself a crashbar from your company. That solid anw well-builded crashbar saved probably my left leg! The only injury was a blue left heel.

Today I am so happy knowing that I still have two legs!

Without this exellent an solid crashbar I would probably have lost my lower leg. Have a look at the picture and you will understand. Excuse my lousy English, but I hope you understand the main picture.

My deepest thanks , Tore Huseby, Norway.

Extremely simple fit to the bike, amazingly tough and solid and looks cooler than any other crash bars out there for the F800GS. Their design flows perfectly with the side paneling of the bike. It's worth noting that for the taller rider, your knees might touch them a little bit if you sit quite far forward on the seat as they do come up quite high. I'm 6f' 2" and it's not a big issue. It's actually quite reassuring to rest your knees against them under heavy braking! Highly recommened!

These are the best bars money can buy, full stop.

I have crashed or dropped my 800GS over 30 times now and the bars have saved me every time. From a 30 Mph low side on the road to rock strewn tracks and muddy green lanes these have done the business. They must have paid for themselves within the first 100 miles of ownership.

Just be aware they are quite tall so if you have long legs your knees may catch the tops. Worth sitting on a bike with them fitted to check.

Fitted these in 10 minutes. I think they make the bike look bigger and more impressive. The downside being that the frame of the bike is now a similar width of the handlebars which makes it more difficult to filter in heavy traffic.
I'd definitely recommend these bars as I have dropped my bike into the corner of a wall before now (was having the drive taken up at the time) and luckily it landed on these bars, which were left with no more than a paper-cut size scratch.
The crash bars are fantastic for wrapping your chain around too ;-)

These are the best crashbars for this bike. It fits absolutely perfect. It does its job, protect the bike's sides. Furthermore, these crashbars gives the bike a very aggressive look. I like them very much and are very usefull.

Extremely well made. Welding is near perfect and powder coating is excellent. I get the impression that if these bars were put to the test they would do a great job. They also look like they will protect the expensive Tupperware which other bars seem not to do.

Crash Bars Review by Brian DeArmon, Overland Journal

There are two reasons Adventure Spec was chosen as the supplier of the crash protection equipment on the Overland Journal's F800GS project: It fits, and it works. Every hole lined up properly, every bolt was the right length, and I didn't have to make a single trip to the hardware store to buy something that was forgotten during packaging. The crash bars have taken a few hard hits, and continue to show their resilience. Absolutely great product. I have no hesitation recommending these crash bars to our subscribers, or my friends. The best of the breed, right here!

The GIT crashbars are absolutely a must have for any rider for any type of riding. Since installing mine, i have taken by bike deep into the mountains going through deep sand, tight trails and gone up/down rock gardens. Due to my short legs and limited skills, i have dropped my bike several times on these trips. I must say short of some scratches on the bars, they have help up perfectly and solidly. My bike still looks as new (thanks to the crash bars) even though it's been dropped multiple times. My latest crash was on the road, for reasons unknown, my rear wheel slipped out while doing a left turn on a surface street and my bike slid about 15 yards with sparks flying. My bike suffered scratches on the bar end but otherwise the crashbar took it all. the bars held up perfectly nothing bent just scrathed. Solid design, solid product and the best looking one out there (IMO). Paid for itself 3x's over.

Crash bars Review by The G man
Crash bars" by , written on 5 October 2011
Very pleased with the look and fit of the Adventure spec Crash bars I have recently fitted to the 800GS. The Instructions were thorough and very comprehensive allowing complete fitting with-in 35 minutes. All of the pieces were present and of good quality including the fasteners. No scratches on the bars at all when delivered despite sparse protection. You will need a Torx type male socket to remove two bolts from the rear of the cylinder head/Frame which are then replaced with two longer bolts which are supplied. The instructions state that you should re-righten these to the manufacturers tourque setting which wasnt that helpful but According to my manual the torque setting for these bolts is 40Nm but obviously check yourself for your own piece of mind.Strongly recommend using/ borrowing a torque wrench to retighten all of the bolts. A great looking and great fitting piece of kit.Im very glad I researched all makes of bars before buying the best in opinion.

Fantastic Review by Simon White

Just thought I'd drop you a quick line about the AdvSpec F800GS crashbars. I had a bit of a run-in with the rear nearside of a curtainside 7.5 tonne truck yesterday - the driver hadn't folded his roller handle and it caught my right handguard as I slowly filtered past. End result being that I came off the back of the bike but managing to twist some revs on and drop the clutch just before I ejected! The bike did a good short solo wheelie before flopping very heavily onto it's nearside. The crashbars took ALL the impact - on it's side the bike was sitting of the crashbars and the pillion footpeg. Aside from cosmetic damage, the crashbars performed as designed and bent inwards slightly, saving the engine or bike frame from any damage. Oh well, written off the crashbars but saved the bike - or so I thought. This morning I undid the crossbar and tweaked them straight again, and they are perfect. Amazing! These crashbars have paid for themselves twice over - and are the very first thing I would buy for a future F800GS.

F800 GS Bash Plate & Crash Bars Review by Irish Dave
F800 GS Bash Plate & Crash Bars" by , written on 5 October 2011
Just received and fitted the bash plate and crash bars to my F800GS no less than five days after placing my order. From the UK to west coast USA is faster than most companies can do it within the United States. Both products are of a far superior build quality to anything I've seen before and the bash plate has obviously had more than a little thought put into it's design. Fitting both parts was easy thanks to their precise engineering and dealing with Adventure Spec was a pleasure, far exceeding my expectations. They have set the bar very high and I would gladly use this company again. Will be strongly recommending them to other riders.

Comment: Hi Guys,

I had a run in with a VW Golf GTi last night, which fortunately I came away from fairly unscathed, the Golf, on the other hand almost lost it's front wing.
I owe you huge thanks for the F800GS crach bars that I bought from you as they totally protected my legs from being crushed, and probably allowed me to keep the bike upright.

If you send me your email address I will forward you on pictures of the damage to the car and the lack of damage to the bike! They are a complete endorsement for what is a great piece of kit!

Many thanks

Ian Wallace
