How Adventure-Spec and 'Boundsy' got together...
Craig Bounds is an Enduro, Trials, MotoX, Rally and Trail rider who has been riding and winning since he was tall enough to reach the pegs. On hearing of Adventure-Spec, Craig contacted us to see if we’d fancy sponsoring him.
His recent wins in UK rallies on a BMW G650X Challenge made him the perfect choice to test our product range on fast forest trails and beyond. He’ll also be debuting the new BMW G450X in the near future and we’ll be working closely with him to develop parts for this exciting new bike.
Check out the links for Craig’s upcoming races, which include The Romaniacs, The Optic and his bid for a slot in the 2009 Dakar...
Not only is Craig an excellent rider with vast experience, he’s also a great ambassador for the sport and a genuinely friendly bloke. Watch out for him at the front of the pack – we figure if our kit can stand the ‘Boundsy’ treatment, it must be Adventure-Spec.
Craigs Profile...
Name : Craig Bounds
Age: 35
Location: South Wales
No Of Years Riding: 20
How did you first get involved with bikes?
I started my riding through a Trials backgound. I never had much cash and was always struggling to make ends meet, almost everything that needed doing was done by me. I dunno where the bike thing came from really, non of my family were really into riding. I really caught the bug after I finished the Scott Trial, thats when I knew I wasnt to bad and possibly had a future in riding bikes.
Do you remember your first big competitive ride?
Thats an not an easy one, I remeber doing all the European rounds, the French Four Day Trials, and the Manx two day events. Like I said I was always skint and travelled by myself. There isnt any one event that stands out really. It was nearly 20 years ago!
Last year you won the expert prologue at The Red Bull Romanics, thats an amazing achievement. What other things have you done that have made you personally proud of yourself
That is an easy one! Definitely my first Six Day event. It was back in 96/97, I'm not sure what happened but the Welsh Team lost a member really late in the day and for some reason I rang them and asked if they'd have me instead! I think I'd been trail riding with some of the team a few weeks before and must have impressed them because they agreed. Problem was I'd never really done an Enduro before, only trials, and as usual I was pretty skint. When we finally arrived at the start everyone had shiny new enduro bikes and perfect kit. I think they all thought I was mad and they were buggered when I unloaded an old '93 YZ250 motocrosser from my van and put on all my Trials kit! I think luck was with me that week, I left with a silver medal and I've never forgotten...
How do you manage to do so many event and still have a life?
I just work really hard. I've always been like that really. I'm not much for sitting in front of the 'tele, I'm usually rebuilding a bike or cleaning/prepping something for my next race. You can fit it all in if you dont mind losing a bit of sleep now and again. Having said that I am pretty obsessed. I guess you have to be really if you want to succeed.
Well it seems like your hard work is paying off, you've recently got a sponsored ride by a main BMW dealer Clarks Motorcycles how did that come about? span>
I think it all started because of the Red Bull Romanics last year really. I teamed up with Nick Plumb for that and poeple saw how hard we worked for that Prologue win. I've been riding the BMW 650-X Challenge for a few races now and its an awesome machine. I've already had a few outright UK rally wins so I'm really loving it. I'm also due to get a new BMW 450x when it arrives in the UK and I cant tell you how excited I am about that. Getting the clothing deal with yourselves was the icing on the cake for me really, 2007 was an excellent year.
What are you goals for 2008 then, where can you go from here?
Definately to finish high as possible in the UK rally championship, and also to move on to the international rally scene and do some of the world rounds. I hope to do the Dakar in 2009 so I need to get all the practice in that I can. If I'm honest I suppose my dream would be to get a top twenty in one of the internationals, but I'll have to work harder than I ever have before to achieve that one!
